We're thrilled to share news of a truly inspiring project that has recently come to fruition within Ward 1 at Kingsway Care Centre Dundee. This wonderful initiative, a collaboration between NHS Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) and commissioned Artist/Designer Louise Kirby, has brought a breath of fresh air and a sense of calm to the ward, and we're very proud to provide funding for this project.
Following discussions with staff groups and other stakeholders at NHS Tayside Ward 1, the vision for this project was clear: to create a more calming, inviting, and easily navigable environment for patients, families, and staff. The answer? Beautiful and thoughtfully designed artworks integrated throughout the ward. This wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about enhancing dementia-friendly wayfinding and fostering a more supportive atmosphere.
The initial inquiry highlighted the need to improve the environment within Ward 1, particularly for individuals living with dementia. Traditional hospital environments can often feel disorienting and overwhelming, potentially increasing anxiety and confusion. The challenge was to develop a design concept that would not only be visually appealing but also intuitively guide individuals through the space, reduce stress, and promote a sense of familiarity and ease.
Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) responded to this important need by commissioning talented Artist/Designer Louise Kirby. Louise brought a wealth of expertise and a deeply person-centered approach to the project. Through extensive consultation workshops with staff, patients, and carers, she gained invaluable insights that directly shaped her designs. The resulting artworks are a direct reflection of these conversations, incorporating elements that resonate with the experiences and needs of those who use the space.
This ambitious project was made possible thanks to a significant £23,000 funding award received by NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation. This vital funding allowed for the refreshing and repainting of the ward to accommodate the new art and design fabrication and installation.
Senior Charge Nurse Steven Elder eloquently captured the positive impact: "I am very happy with the outcome, and it was a very interesting process to be involved in. It has involved both other staff groups and stakeholders along with carers in the decision making and is a great improvement that feels like our own bespoke environment."
Artist Louise Kirby shared her vision: "This has been a fantastic design commission to work on in collaboration with THAT. I set out to create a bespoke and cohesive creative concept for the ward, one that thoughtfully considers the people who use the space, including Dementia Friendly principles. My aim was to help make the environment feel warmer, more welcoming, and visually engaging, while also supporting wayfinding, reducing stress, and softening the clinical feel with little nods to Dundee. It’s been a real pleasure to see the design come to life, with smooth and professional fabrication and installation by Phoenix Design."
The transformation of Ward 1 is already having a tangible impact. The carefully considered artworks act as visual cues, aiding navigation and reducing feelings of disorientation for patients. The warmer and more inviting atmosphere contributes to a greater sense of wellbeing for everyone who spends time in the ward. By softening the clinical feel, the environment becomes less intimidating and more conducive to healing and comfort. This project truly demonstrates the power of thoughtful design in enhancing the care experience.
