NHS Tayside has installed three new secure bike lockers at the Carseview Centre following a successful funding application to the NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation.
The idea came from Occupational Therapist and Staff Wellbeing Champion Kerry Malaney, who listened to staff feedback highlighting that the lack of sheltered, secure bike storage was a major barrier to choosing cycling as a way to commute.
The new lockers now offer staff a safe and reliable place to store their bikes — supporting healthier travel choices and contributing to a more sustainable NHS Tayside.
Many staff members shared that they would like to cycle to work but were discouraged by concerns over theft, damage, and exposure to bad weather. Without secure storage, active travel wasn’t a realistic option for many.
The funding from the Charitable Foundation allowed the Carseview site to address this challenge directly by providing robust, weatherproof, lockable bike units for staff use.
To officially unveil the new lockers, November’s Wellbeing Wednesday hosted a lively team cycling challenge in the Carseview reception area using static bikes.
11 teams took part
The winning team, Mulberry Ward, achieved an incredible 21km in 30 minutes
Participants were treated to smoothies made by activity workers Louise and Mike, alongside peer recovery worker Jamie
The event generated fantastic enthusiasm and highlighted the positive culture of wellbeing across the site.
Brian Jones, Chair of NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation & NHST Sustainability Lead, said;
“The installation of secure bike lockers at Carseview is a fantastic example of how small, targeted investments can make a meaningful difference to staff wellbeing and our wider sustainability ambitions… These new facilities not only promote healthier lifestyles but also help us reduce our environmental impact.”
Michelle, Senior Charge Nurse, said;
“Cycling to work has become a really enjoyable experience with clear physical and mental health benefits. I wouldn’t have brought my bike without secure storage — it’s brilliant to now have these available.”
Mike, Activity Worker, said;
“Thanks to the Foundation, I can now bring my bike to work and store it safely. It’s boosted my wellbeing and fitness — a big thank you to the Foundation.”
These testimonials highlight how the lockers are already helping staff feel more confident, motivated, and empowered to choose active travel.
